The Power of Hope
The Purdue Cancer Center is located in West Lafayette, Indiana – and is serving the world through its cancer research. As a part of Purdue University, the Cancer Center founded in 1976 and has been funded by the National Cancer Institute since 1978. Our Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated basic science center – one of only 7 in the Nation. Our researchers work at the basic scientific level and develop new technologies and devices that detect and treat cancer. By understanding how cancer develops, we can uncover secrets of cancer cells and create new anti-cancer drugs. With additional research and funding the research capabilities are unlimited!
We are asking for your help in funding four important endeavors at the Purdue Cancer Center – A General Research Fund to help fund the needs to unlocking cancer secrets; Strategic Asset Enhancement Fund which will help fund new innovative ideas; Women’s Cancer Fund that focuses special resources on creating new diagnostic and treatment options for the most common cancers in women; and the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund that will help lead the way in pancreatic cancer research.
Cancer is a major disease that affects millions of Americans. While cancer is the second leading cause of health-related deaths in the US, progress is being made in the fight against cancer and death rates have fallen over the past few years, primarily as a result of better early detection techniques but also through the development of more effective treatments.
When we speak of “cancer” often the impression is that it is one disease. In reality cancer is many diseases that share some characteristics, primarily the trait of uncontrolled growth. Cancers from each organ are unique as is their response to treatment.
Our scientists are making significant contributions to the medical well being of citizens in the United Statesand the world by being on the cusp of a new era in cancer research. The future holds more precise treatments, fewer recurrences, and better outcomes for cancer patients everywhere. We just need your help to turn today’s research into tomorrow’s cures.
Our Giving Wishes
Purdue Cancer Center Research Fund - Our wish, $100,000
The Purdue Cancer Center is well established and has a strong research base that is working on many specific cancer types. Our scientists are leading in the discovery of new imaging techniques, better early detection tests, and novel treatments. Currently, 11 new treatments are in or near clinical trials as a result of research being done at the Purdue Cancer Center. While the overall efforts are moving in a positive direction, the process is slowed because of limited funds. To broaden the scope of the Cancer Center’s research and improve the process of discovering new treatments, flexibility in asset investment is needed.
We invite you to participate in our quest for effective treatments and advanced diagnostics. We realized that no two gifts are alike and encourage gifts of all sizes, shapes, and purposes. Every gift impacts the lives of so many.
Strategic Asset Enhancement Fund - Our wish, $75,000
The scientists at the Purdue Cancer Center are leaders in their respective fields and many young scientists are moving toward leadership positions. However, adequate funds to support early stage, highly innovative research are limiting. Often the most important discoveries are not those that we would predict based on available evidence. Rather, they are unexpected observations that must be validated through further research. Investment in new ideas by foundations and other funding agencies takes time because scientists must generate sufficient information in their laboratories to justify the investment. We have limited funds to support these new ideas, so the objective of the Strategic Asset Enhancement fund is to provide funds to nurture new ideas.
Through supporting new ideas, we will provide opportunity to Purdue Cancer Center scientists to develop concepts that otherwise would be difficult, if not impossible, to develop. In truth some novel ideas languish because of a lack of funds to nurture them. We believe that by investing in these new ideas, Purdue Cancer Center scientists will be able to develop new treatments that will lead to our goal of reducing the pain and suffering caused by the disease
Women’s Cancer Fund - Our wish, $50,000
Breast cancer, Ovarian cancer, and Cervical cancer are the most common types of cancer associated with women. The Purdue Cancer Center knows the importance of getting additional and reliable diagnostic tests and treatments for these types of cancer so that women can be treated faster and the chances of survival will increase.
This year over 211,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer, as it is the most common cancer among women. Ovarian cancer accounts for nearly 3% of all cancers among women and causes more deaths than any other cancer because most often it is caught too late. About 20,180 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the United States this next year. 9,710 women will find out they have invasive cervical cancer this year about 1/3 of women will die from this disease. This is the second most common cause of death from cancer in women across the world.
The vision of the Purdue Cancer Center, our friends, families, and researchers is to help put an end to the suffering and deaths of these kinds, and all, of cancers. Your generosity in providing to the Women’s Cancer Fund will sustain our ability to provide the research needed to fight breast, ovarian and cervical cancer together.
Pancreatic Cancer Fund - Our wish, $50,000
Pancreatic cancer begins in the tissues of the pancreas and has poor prognosis up until this point. The cancer spreads at a rapid rate and is not often times detected until it is already in its early or later stages. Signs and symptoms usually do not appear until the cancer is quite advanced, resulting in over 34,000 deaths each year, according to the latest National Cancer Institute findings.
Scientists at the Purdue Cancer Center are currently investigating new therapeutic strategies for dealing with pancreatic cancer at its earliest stages. Once we can understand why this specific cancer spreads so rapidly, we can help treat and prevent the tumors from growing. Our investigators can assess pancreatic cancer cells and target their cell signaling devices. By looking deep into these cells, they are uncovering the mysteries that pancreatic cancer cells possess.
We know how important it is to get additional and reliable diagnostic tests and treatments for pancreatic cancer so that people all over the world can be treated faster and the chances of survival will increase.
Your generosity in providing to the pancreatic cancer fun will help this research continue and one day we will be able to put an end to this dreadful disease.
** UPDATE: Funds are already being rasied to further Pancreatic Cancer Research thru the Jordan-Rieger Pancreatic Cancer Fund. November 8th marks the first annual dinner, silent auction, and live entertainment event at Marion, Inc in downtown Indianapolis, IN. For more information on how to donate or attend this event, contact Beth Steurer at steurered@purdue.edu, 765-494-1109.
